Women Who Dare Tickets on Sale

Girls Inc. of the Island City hosts its 13th annual awards program March 24 honoring women and teens who are community leaders

 

Girls Incorporated of the Island City will hold its 13th Annual Women Who Dare Awards event during a March 24 luncheon at Scott's Seafood Restaurant and Pavillion in Oakland.

The event begins with registration at the door at 11 a.m. with lunch and the program following from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Women Who Dare Awards Event is sponsored each year by Girls Inc. to recognize adult and teenage women who are making a difference in their community and who inspire others.

This year the honors go to teenage girls and women who represent excellence and dare to be leaders in their service, work, field, or community.

The awards are presented to those who are strong (motivating or inspiring others to reach their true potential) those who are smart (using their expertiese to create programs and initiatives that make them a leader) and those who are bold (advocating for change and influencing others). 

Adult award recipients

Here are this year's award categories and list of adult recipients: 

Daring - Sharine V. Thenard, DDS, MS, Pediatric Dentist, Alameda Pediatric Dentistry. She will also serve as keynote speaker at the event.

Strong - Dr. Jannett Jackson, Ph.D, President, College of Alameda

Smart - Dr. Emma Lees, Ph.D, Vice President, Oncology, Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research

Bold - Sarah Olaes, Enrichment Program Director, Alameda Education Foundation

1964 Society - Joyce Denyven, Community Leader and Former Executive Director, Girls Incorporated of the Island City

Teen award recipients

Here are teen award categories and recipients:

Strong - Mi-Anne Chan, Founder, Roots and Shoots Club at Alameda High School

Smart - Carrie Huang, Area 1 Director, Interact Club

Bold - Jill and Joan Barcelona, Co-Presidents, Alameda High School Red Cross Club

Award presenters

At the ceremony, honorees will be presented with their awards by participants in Girls Inc.'s Best Foot Forward Program. In the Best Food Forward Program girls ages 6-12, participate in a multi-workshop series that teaches a variety of skills including interviewing, script writing, public speaking, and etiquette.
