Adoptions on the Rise at Alameda Animal Shelter

One in a series of regular updates about the Alameda Animal Shelter, now under nonprofit management by Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter.

We’re delighted to report that Tia, an older stray dog who came to the Alameda Animal Shelter in July 2011 and spent the last eight months entertaining us with her playfulness and smiles, has been adopted. We knew it wouldn’t be easy finding a home for a 9-year-old dog with medical issues, but one very special person walked into the shelter and fell in love with Tia. Now she is in a lovely new home and being pampered every day.

That’s only one of the success stories that have brightened our days since FAAS assumed responsibility for the shelter in January. More and more animals are coming in every day, especially since we’ve expanded our hours of operation. We have more than 40 dogs of all sizes, cats and baby rabbits awaiting adoption. Fortunately, more animals like Tia are being adopted.

 Volunteer program launched

The increased number of animals means we need more help. We have launched our new volunteer program and scheduled orientations for anyone interested in helping FAAS care for our community’s abandoned animals. Orientations are being held Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings in March and April. Anyone interested in learning more about our volunteer program or signing up for an orientation should contact the FAAS Volunteer Manager Cindy Shelby at volunteer.faas@gmail.com.

APD donates ambulance

We are excited and grateful that the Alameda Police Department has donated a former ambulance to transport shelter animals to spay/neuter surgery or for other medical appointments. The donation is one of many great ways the APD has been supportive throughout the transition of the shelter from police management to FAAS. As a small thank you for everything they have done, we treated the entire Alameda Police Department to a pizza party on Leap Day February 29.

 Mojito Monday nets $800

Another FAAS supporter is . Guest Bartender and Alameda City Manager John Russo poured a whole lot of mojitos at Angela’s February 13 Mojito Monday and raised over $800 in tips for the shelter. Three cheers for Angela’s and John!! Our next Mojito Monday is April 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. so please join us at Angela’s for a great Mojito. We’ll also be at Alameda’s Earth Day celebration April 21.

Wish list established

We have created a list of items that we can use to help keep our animal guests comfortable and safe while they are with us. The list ranges from food for the animals to copy paper for our office. The complete list is on our website, www.faas.bbnow.org along with a full listing of our events. You can also visit us at the shelter 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Who knows, you might even come home with a new member of the family.
