Mayor Marie Gilmore proclaimed February 5 Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter Day in recognition of the contribution the organization makes to saving the lives of Alameda's pets.

Alameda Mayor Gilmore proclaimed Tuesday, February 5, 2013 Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter Day on behalf of the City Council. The mayor thanked FAAS for its commitment to the city’s animal population and read the following proclamation:

WHEREAS, Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter , also known as FAAS, completed a very successful first year of operating the former City animal shelter; and

WHEREAS, FAAS increased adoptions by 21% in 2012 with the placement of 455 dogs, cats, and other pets into loving new homes; and

WHEREAS, FAAS introduced life-saving medical care programs, such as the Angel Fund, and partnerships with local veterinary hospitals; and

WHEREAS, FAAS returned 229 lost pets to worried owners and initiated a microchip program to make it easier for citizens to locate their lost pets; and

WHEREAS, FAAS  is improving  the  shelter  stay  for  abandoned  pets  with greater  enrichment  activities, including long walks and toys for dogs, and socializing with cats and rabbits; and

WHEREAS, FAAS  has  more  than 200 dedicated volunteers who have put in more than 5,000 hours this past year to give the animals in the shelter the very best care possible; and

WHEREAS, FAAS  has built and maintained a close partnership with the Alameda Police Department and City officials to nurture and support a safe and humane community for our City’s pets; and

WHEREAS, FAAS is committed to providing leadership and stewardship for animal welfare in Alameda, and for providing programs that foster respect for animals, promote responsible pet guardianship, and eliminate animal suffering.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Marie L. Gilmore, Mayor of the City of Alameda do hereby express my gratitude to FAAS, and do hereby proclaim, Tuesday, February 5, 2013 as Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter Day in the City of Alameda and urge Alamedans to join me in thanking FAAS for their contribution to saving the lives of our City’s pets.

FAAS greatly appreciates this honor and is grateful to the Mayor, City Council, and all city departments for the unique city/nonprofit partnership that is working so well.

Thanks to local businesses

For the past year, Urban Island Home Furnishings  has been holding special consignment sales to benefit the homeless pets at the Alameda Animal Shelter. To date, they have raised more than $2,800. These funds will provide critical medical care and special enrichment activities to keep the shelter animals healthy and happy while they await adoption.

Recently, Tomatina’s Restaurant raised more than $900 by giving FAAS 20% of a full day’s meal receipts. The restaurant was packed for both lunch and dinner and was busy throughout the day.

Community support from businesses like Urban Island and Tomatina’s helps us toward our goal of finding a new home for all the adoptable animals at the shelter. Thank you, Alameda businesses!!
