Community Support Helps the Shelter Save Animals' Lives

Individuals and businesses step up to help the shelter; Angel Fund created to pay vet bills for sick or injured shelter animals.

In the months since Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) assumed responsibility for the shelter, we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community – support that is critical to our ability to achieve our mission on behalf of the animals. Special thanks to the following individuals and businesses that helped out this past month:

Pat Payne of Alameda's Big Bird Studios deserves a huge round of applause for generously donating one of her sculptures for a fundraiser to support the shelter animals.  FAAS raised $1300.  Visit her website at http://bigbird-studios.com/ to view all of her beautiful sculptures.

Citizen Canine donated a beautiful meet-and-greet area to our shelter. Thanks to them, any adopter can meet their new best canine friend and play for a while prior to adoption.  See the photo of our new space.

hosted a Mojito Monday on June 18th to celebrate Pride Week and support FAAS. Our celebrity bartenders, FAAS board members John Lipp and Michael Miller, raised $956 in tips for FAAS. Thanks to all of you that go to Mojito Mondays and support us.

Happy Endings: Recently, a beat-up fluffy orange cat was rescued from the golf course in Harbor Bay. He was trying to join a colony of feral cats living there, but they were using him as a kitty version of a punching bag. The poor young guy had been bitten, scratched and torn up and he was super thin. When he came in to the shelter, FAAS staff rushed him to Park Centre Hospital where they cleaned him, patched him, neutered him and gave him some much needed food. FAAS staff brought him back to the Alameda Animal Shelter to recover and get loads of love and attention. They quickly determined that this sweet, calm, loving cat would make a wonderful pet after his recovery. He was named Ace (a golf term, of course) and both volunteers and staff showered him with attention until he was adopted.

Mia came to the shelter as a very pregnant stray in the summer of 2011. This little tan Chihuahua  was terribly underweight, sick and about to deliver – which she did a few days later when she gave birth to six puppies. Veterinarians provided the medical care she needed while a foster family gave Mia a temporary home to care for her puppies. Several weeks later, they were all back at the shelter and the puppies quickly found homes. Mia stayed at the shelter for almost a year until she finally found her forever home with a wonderful couple and a big dog to boss around.

Angel Fund: Ace, Mia and many other abandoned pets come to our shelter in need of special medical attention. One of our priorities at FAAS is to ensure the health of the pets before they are adopted. Because medical care can be expensive, FAAS has established the Angel Fund to provide the best care possible to abandoned animals needing it. Donations from the community make this important fund possible. Please consider a donation today to help save an animal’s life. Visit our website http://www.alamedaanimalshelter.org/ and make your donation (marked for the Angel Fund).
