Second annual Wiggle Waggle Walk follows successful Maddie’s Fund adopt-a-thon

June started off with a bang at the Alameda Animal Shelter as 43 formerly homeless animals went to forever homes during the marathon two-day Maddie’s Fund adopt-a-thon June 1 and 2. Among the 10 dogs and 33 cats adopted were some of our longest term feline residents -- Cricket, Coco and Ella. The animals were adopted for free during the annual weekend event underwritten by Maddie’s Fund.

More excitement is planned this weekend during the second annual Wiggle Waggle Walk and pet festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15 at the Harbor Bay Ferry Building. Registration is $25 per dog before the event and $30 at the walk. Dog lovers who are currently without a canine friend are invited to come and enjoy being surrounded by more than 150 happy, wiggly dogs.

Lots of fun activities are being planned for all ages, including a doggy fashion show, contests and more.

The highlight of the day will be a scenic one-mile walk along the bay. Walkers are asked to collect pledges for cash donations to FAAS. Participants who collect $50 or more in pledges will receive a goodie bag stuffed full of treats. The person raising the most money in pledges will win a 3-night stay at a beautiful Tahoe home.

To register for Wiggle Waggle Walk, go to http://faas2ndannualwigglewagglewalk.eventbrite.com/ or send your registration to WWW, 1590 Fortmann Way, Alameda, CA  94501. Visit the FAAS website at www.AlamedaAnimalShelter.org for more information or call 510-337-8565.

Remembering Cliff Maderia Jr.

Before Cliff Maderia passed away in March, he asked his partner of 23 years, Deborah Haller, to make sure any donations in his memory were made to Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS).  Cliff was an avid animal lover who found the dog of his dreams at FAAS.

Last August, while sitting in an Alameda restaurant, Cliff saw a FAAS dog adoption ad in the Alameda Sun and suggested to Deborah that they go look at the dog in the ad, who was named Clover. They came to the shelter and quickly found Clover who charmed them by kissing Deborah’s extended hand. Less than an hour later, she was walking out the shelter door with Cliff and Deborah, heading for a great new life.

Sadly, Cliff was diagnosed with a rare and untreatable cancer a few months later and passed away with Deborah and Clover by his side. Because of the generosity of all who knew Cliff, FAAS has added his name to a plaque in the shelter lobby where people can remember their loved ones for a donation of $500 or more. To learn more about this wonderful way to honor the passing of a beloved person or pet, please call FAAS at 510-337-8565.

Shelter Make-Over

The interior walls of the Alameda Animal Shelter are newly painted and kennel floors are resurfaced.  The place is sparkling so stop by and pay a visit to the animals while enjoying the new look. FAAS is very grateful to the Humane Society of Alameda for paying for the resurfacing of the kennel floors. They look wonderful!
