Obituary: Soleil Banguid of The Frog and Fiddle, Soleil's African Cuisine

The chef who brought pan-African food to Alameda passed away last week.

Soleil Banguid, who — with his wife TJ — has been serving up pan-African food at Webster Street's The Frog and Fiddle since late 2011, died last week at the age of 45, according to an article on The Alamedan website.

Banguid succumbed to a stroke, the article says.

A native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Banguid first became known to Alamedans through the couple's booth at the Alameda Farmers Market.

Trained as an accountant, Banguid said in a Patch interview last year that he learned to cook from his mother.

He said he later expanded his repertoire by experimenting with dishes prepared by college classmates from many regions of Africa. His personal favorite from The Frog and Fiddle menu was peanut stew, he said.

A memorial service and a fundraiser to help with medical and funeral expenses are in the planning stage.
