I about the possibility of shortening summer vacation and adding a fall break in Alameda schools.
There are several reasons why this is a bad idea. In , one of the reasons given for shortening summer is that kids have trouble switching back into school mode after a long break.
However, unless you were to turn summer into only a two-week-long break, no matter how long the summer is, kids will still have a big transition to make after. So, really, the transition issue is unavoidable.
Supposedly, with the new calendar, we would still get the same amount of off days because of a fall break. Nice and fair, right? Not really. A break that is still part of the school year has a different atmosphere than summer, a worse one. And, also, what about family reunions and summer camps that often take place in August? Those camps would turn into school year camps. Not quite as fun!
Whether or not this is a good plan is debatable, but I do not like it.
