BADRAP.org Recognizes Alameda Dog Advocates!!

from Badrap.org's Facebook page:

Want to be an effective advocate for the shelter dogs you fall for? Take a lesson from Sara and Janine. They dove in with both feet recently to help a young girl named Prada with their lifesaving activism. Prada was under socialized and poorly behaved, so not slated for adoption, but her advocates got busy and helped her get on track. How'd they do it?

1) They learned about the issues that were causing concern for the shelter staff (leash reactivity and over excitement in her kennel)
2) They stayed respectful with shelter staff and kept the lines of communication open, and relayed their strong desire to help Prada survive
3) They got permission to get some training for Prada (in this case, to BADRAP’s classes)
4) They built a Facebook page to help adopters learn more about her, and promoted her widely with gorgeous photos (and without using icky, panicked messaging!)

5) They learned how to work with Prada, helped her make impressive improvements and continued her lessons throughout the week
6) Their commitment bought them enough time to locate a rescue (CA Pit Bull Rescue!) who would accept her and, Voila! Prada lucked into a foster home.

Congratulations Sara and Janine and PRADA! You’ve provided a great example of effective advocacy for a shelter dog at risk. AND thank you Alameda Animal Services for allowing this to work.

Community solutions are where it’s at. You CAN make a difference if you are willing to roll up your sleeves, do the hard work, sniff out your best resources, and keep communications flowing.
