Park Vista Square Building No. 3

What would you like to see at the new Park Vista Square, Building No. 3, next to Marketplace?

A couple of weeks ago we asked for your suggestions on the corner building at the new Park Vista Square building, next to Marketplace.  This week, we’d like to get your suggestions on building No. 3 of the new Park Vista Square that’s at 1716 Park St. at Buena Vista.

This is a newly-constructed building that sits where a car rental company used to live. This space measures 5000 sq. ft. There's free parking in the lot right behind the building.

Bill Phua is the developer for this project and he’s very interested in knowing what you would like to see here. For this building he’ll consider many uses, for example: restaurant, retail, grocery, gym, office space, just to name a few.

Suggest any type of business you wish you had in Alameda regardless of how niche you might think it is.  One way to think about it is to suggest every type of business you frequent and have to leave Alameda for.

Alameda Patch has partnered with Spotmojo to collect your suggestions.  The suggestions submitted on Spotmojo will go directly to the developer and potential businesses, which they'll use to try to make it happen.  You can make your suggestions in the comments section below, but please note, your suggestions will only count if posted on Spotmojo.

Is this normal procedure for developers to just build buildings without having any idea who will lease space in them? And the city that approves doesn't care that the developer has no idea of who or what will go in these buildings? It seems like really poor business practice and lack of foresight. What if 1000 people in Alameda suggest there should be a Baby Gap here? How could anyone "make that happen"?

Bring back Crosstown Community Center!
That place was awesome ;-)

They should open an eatery that serves simple, low-priced, prepared insects and earthworms (and maybe other types of vermin dishes on a seasonal basis). There is no place to get this type of cuisine in Alameda. Or really in the greater Bay Area really. This could be a great opportunity to bring business to Alameda from all over by filling this niche market!!!
Maybe after buying their grasshopper skewers, the customers could then patronize one of these raw vegan salad bar places that Alamedans are always hoping is around the corner, but never seems to open. Synergy!! I wish I had time to catch and cook my own cockroach casseroles at home (they always taste better than store-bought) but with my busy schedule as a telephone sanitization engineer, it's just not in the cards.

Hi Spanky, From what I know from the developer there are parties that are interested in renting space here but both the developer and the businesses are interested in hearing what the community wants. Think of Spotmojo as an additional market research tool businesses, developers, and commercial realtors can use.

Yes, yes, yes!

I get that. I guess if it was my money I would have done the surveys and research before I built a building..

Looks like a good place for a Chrysler Corporation show and sales room, if you ask me.

How about a nice Men store like Alberts,or Tweeds that we use to have here.

Plutos! (http://www.plutosfreshfood.com/). This place is fantastic! It is a combo salad/eatery with AMAZING food (salads, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, steak, etc.) I went to school in Davis, CA where there is one and I kid you not, still crave it all the time. There is one in Palo Alto, but that's too far! This place is exactly what Alameda needs.

Given that East Side Pizza will be opening in the old Ching Hua place, I'd say a Barneys Gourmet Burger restaurant would be perfect. Zachary's Pizza and Barneys Burgers are co-tenants on College Ave. in Rockridge and Solano Ave. in Albany. They attract the same demographics.
Also it would fit nicely next to the fish grotto restaurant that we’re hopefully getting in the building next door.

A Disney Store

I would prefer GYMBOREE for a children's clothing store. The business model of the Gap stores, is to sell inexpensive clothing that disintegrates within six months.
Tom Brody December 16, 2012 at 07:03 pm
I agree with this suggestion, and suggest the following all-encompassing compromise that could satisfy all parties, or in the alternative, could induce disgust in all parties. Why not a restaurant that makes fish-pizza pies and fishburgers?

Zacchary's. Or a Scolari's/brew pub combo.
Or a shop with well-made, stylish (not tacky) clothing and/or shoes professional women can wear to work. Or for a chain, I like Crate and Barrel. Or a Tesla dealership!
Tom Brody December 22, 2012 at 12:48 pm
Good idea (see above). A Tesla dealership would help put the City of Alameda on the map, and stem the tide of business that are nail salons, second hand stores, yogurt shops, hot dog emporiums, and so on.

Woke me from a dead sleep. Sounded like 6 or 9 gun shots north of Melrose on Maitland DR.
David Howard June 15, 2013 at 02:08 pm
APD said they found no evidence of gun shots and suspect fireworks.Read More http://www.action-alameda-news.com/2013/06/09/fourth-of-july-public-service-announcement/

When they build that high density development on the Harbor Bay Club site with 25% low incomeRead More housing requirement, Bay Farm will be hearing a lot more gun shots at night.
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) June 12, 2013 at 11:42 am
So sad to see. Did you report this to East Bay Regional Park District? I provided the number in yourRead More last posting.
Lorraine Sarullo June 12, 2013 at 12:35 pm
Yes, I reported it to the EBRP staff who happened to be nearby at the beach. I also reported it toRead More the warden of Fish and Wildlife in Sacramento and the warden of the local territory. The local warden told me yesterday that he will be patrolling the area, but I did not get to speak to him today (only left both wardens a voicemail message).
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) June 12, 2013 at 04:11 pm
Nice, thanks for the update, and sharing these posts with us, Lorraine. If it is a person behind allRead More of this, hopefully he/she will get caught soon.

Anonymous tip to the fire department?
quietneeded June 12, 2013 at 04:17 pm
Leaving a note to them is a bad idea if it really is a illegal operation. So many ways that can goRead More wrong. Just call the police dept. Leave a tip. Simple and safe.
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) June 13, 2013 at 09:03 am
Agree with Carol. Perhaps an anonymous tip to Alameda Fire or Alameda Police.

Given the targeted harvesting of parts, this is not a "times are hard and food is scarce"Read More issue. It's greedy, ignorant, and yes it's disgusting and disrespectful to nature. http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/extinction-countdown/2012/01/17/manta-rays-endangered-by-sudden-demand-from-chinese-medicine/
Lorraine Sarullo June 11, 2013 at 04:13 pm
Thank you both (Nay and Analisa) for the information. Maybe I got the name of the park serviceRead More mixed up. It was the beach area around Grand St.

I contacted Crown Beach (part of the EBRP). They checked into the matter with Fish and WildlifeRead More (previously Fish and Game), to see if there was any wrongdoing. On the surface of things, it seems the wings (fins) are the edible part of the ray. And apparently, the way regulations are written it may not be even be considered littering! So, however inhumane, disrespectful, selfish, gruesome it may seem, there may not have been any fishing laws broken. Although, when I spoke with the warden of Fish and Wildlife he said he will be looking into the matter. To voice your opinion and propose changes to regulation, you can write a letter to and attend a Fish and Game Commission town hall meeting here is the link: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/contact/ and http://www.fgc.ca.gov/meetings/2013/index.aspx I plan on writing to suggest regulation against polluting public beaches with unused portions of the catch from fishing and also ask for recommendations on limiting the catch on fish that only have small percentage of edible parts (such as the rays). I would welcome any help in a letter writing campaign, the contact information is listed on the link provided above. Many Thanks.
