Every year on Valentine's Day in Justin Herman Plaza, when the clock at the San Francisco Ferry Building strikes 6 p.m., pillows start a-flailing and a-flying for the annual Valentine's Day pillow fight.
A neighbor convinced my family to join them in hopping on the ferry, riding across the Bay to watch people beat the living stuffing out of each other until, eventually, everyone gets tired and goes home.
But everyone was smiling, laughing and looked to be having the time of their lives. Even though we kept to the outskirts, all our kids (ranging from five to 12) had a great time as well. Brothers whacking sisters, kids pummeling dads who, in turn, got a few good licks in on moms. No one got hurt, no one got out of hand and everyone had a blast!
It's free, it happens every Valentine's Day and it's short and sweet. All you need is a feather pillow, that's it. We stayed for about an hour, grabbed a hot cocoa and took the ferry back home. Catch ya next year, Cupid.
