Summer's Pride

Hoping for some vapors this summer season...

Oh, summer. What adventures will you offer this time around?

As I dust off my bathing suit and prepare my toes for their seasonal debut, I can’t help but wonder, Will I face the coming BBQ parties solo again this year? Shall I extend my subscription to Match.com? What is the going rate at a male escort services these days? Are there still such things? Reminder: must check the back of the East Bay Express.

As independent and free-spirited as I like to claim to be, nothing brings out the wistful romanticism in me faster than summer. The flowers are no help, sending their lusty aromas wafting through my open window. The hummingbirds are in cahoots as well, dancing at the front porch then zipping just out of sight. Nature is sending her not-so-subtle message – get out and intermingle!

I love hot weather. Love it. The hotter and stickier the better. I lived in New Orleans for three years and miss it very much. Humans really do seem to shed their concerns in conjunction with their clothing. To be able to walk around at night without a sweater is sheer bliss to me and lying in a hammock gazing up at the stars on a long, warm evening (avec un spécial quelqu'un) is one of the best things ever.

We get about four such nights a year in the Bay Area in September/October, maybe. If it stays over 75 degrees for longer than two days here, it’s a heat wave. Hot nights are so special around these parts that folks get downright loopy. Some even abandon their TVs/computers/iPhones to sit out on their porches drinking and smiling. Hoorah! What a lovely notion. If only it happened more often.

As William Blake so eloquently wrote, “How sweet I roamed from field to field, and tasted all the summer's pride.”

So, summer, bring it on. I will not be intimidated by your intoxicating embrace and veiled promise of a new romance. I will happily attend to whatever you send my way – male escort or not.

Addendum: and what’s up with only two Concerts at the Cove this summer?  Granted, they are a tad hokey but it was so nice to drink a beer on the beach and people watch. What a rip!!
