Once again, it’s that time of year to celebrate the season on our bustling, little island in the bay. Pumpkins are popping up on porches and the wind whips through the trees as the branches dance.
Hooray for Halloween!
I know it is easy to be disheartened by all that’s going on in recent days. Folks are just trying to figure things out and find enough hours in the day to get things done. It seems maybe we could all use a little creative distraction?
Alameda – Haunt Your House! contest and canned food drive started back in 2006 as a way for folks to showcase all the fabulous architecture of our town by encouraging them to decorate and haunt their homes for Halloween. We also ask all participants to collect canned goods from friends, neighbors and folks who enjoy the decorations through the month of October. The contest has grown and morphed and rolled with the punches – but we’ve stuck with it because it is fun and people love it! Just ask the folks at Bike Alameda who’ve had a blast touring the entries for the last couple of years.
We are also VERY proud to say we’ve collected over 2,000 lbs
of canned goods the last two years in support of the Alameda Food Bank.
The purpose of the contest is simple and three-fold: to celebrate the uniqueness of all the great houses in our town, to participate in a community effort in support of the Alameda Food Bank; and to have fun.
It is not some serious competition or about winning prizes (although, we do give out some cool ones!) We hope that everyone can enjoy the contest in the whimsical manner it is intended.
Can’t decorate this year? Spread the word and/or enter someone who is!! Also, You can still participate by collecting canned goods and lending a hand to folks less fortunate during this holiday season.

Whatever you get up to this Halloween – be safe and stay scary.
