$995,000 Settlement in Fatal Shooting of Alameda Man by Oakland Schools Cop

Raheim Brown was shot and killed after he allegedly tried to stab a school district police officer with a screwdriver.

The Oakland Unified School district has agreed to a $995,000 settlement in a pair of lawsuits filed in connection with the shooting death of Raheim Brown, 20, of Alameda, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Brown was shot and killed Jan. 22, 2011, after he allegedly tried to stab an Oakland schools police officer on Joaquin Miller Road in Oakland, the Chronicle reports.

Brown was sitting in a parked car near the site of a Skyline High School dance when he reportedly attempted to stab Sgt. Jonathan Bellusa, the article says.

A second officer, Sgt. Barhin Bhatt, opened fire and continued shooting even after Brown was incapacitated, Bellusa said in a deposition.

The suits were filed by Brown's parents, Lori Davis and Raheim Brown Sr., and by LaDonna Smith, who was pregnant with Brown's child at the time of the shooting, the article says.
