Updated: Alameda Man Arrested in Berkeley Killing

Daniel Jordan Dewitt, 23, of Alameda, was arrested in connection with an attack in the Berkeley hills. His mother, Candy Dewitt, told the San Francisco Chronicle that her son is mentally ill.

 

Alameda resident Daniel Jordan Dewitt, whose name appears on this 2007 list of Alameda High School graduates, was arrested in a Berkeley hills neighborhood Saturday night in connection with a slaying there.

In Berkeley Saturday around 8:45 p.m., residents called police to report a prowler outside their home near Shasta Road and Grizzly Peak Boulevard.

The man went out to confront the prowler and was assaulted, police said.

The resident, whose name the Berkeley Police Department is not releasing (the San Francisco Chronicle has identified the property owner as 67-year-old Peter Cukor) was treated at the scene and transported to a local trauma center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Daniel Jordan Dewitt, 23, of Alameda, was detained less than a block from the crime scene and subsequently arrested for murder, police said. 

Daniel Dewitt's mother, Candy Dewitt of Alameda, told the San Francisco Chronicle that her son suffers from mental illness. 

"I've been telling people for years he needs help, but they're just throwing people with mental illness onto the streets," she said.

Dewitt is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
