Alameda Police Department Announces Arrest in Burglaries on East End, Bay Farm

APD says they've arrested a 50-year-old in connection with a number of burglaries on the East End and Bay Farm.

NOTICE FROM THE ALAMEDA POLICE DEPARTMENT

During the months of November and December, 2011, a number of homes were burglarized on the east end of Alameda and on Bay Farm Island. In addition to the burglary investigations launched by detectives, the Alameda Police responded by increasing community awareness and targeting specific areas for directed enforcement efforts.

On the evening of Dec. 19, 2011, private residential security officers with Harbor Bay Security alerted police to a suspicious person in an area where several burglaries had previously occurred. That individual, a 50-year-old Oakland man, was detained and arrested for possession of burglary tools, a misdemeanor. At the time of this arrest the suspect could not be definitively linked to any of the Alameda burglaries.

The ensuing investigation by Alameda Property Crimes Unit detectives subsequently connected the suspect, John Lyman Gomes, to several Alameda burglaries.

On Jan. 18, 2012, arrest and search warrants were served at Gomes’ residence in Oakland by members of the Alameda Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit.

As a result of these efforts, property stolen in at least five Alameda burglaries has been recovered, and further links to other burglaries are anticipated as the investigation progresses.

The suspect has been charged with multiple counts of possession of stolen property, burglary, and narcotics possession, and was booked at the Alameda County Jail in Santa Rita. The investigations are ongoing.
