An attempted-murder suspect who led police on a car chase through Alameda several weeks ago was shot by Alameda County Sheriff's deputies in Castro Valley on Tuesday after he drove toward them in a car, according to media reports.
Officials continue to investigate the shooting reported at around 3:30 p.m., and have blocked off Center Street from Castro Valley Boulevard to David Street.
The 39-year-old suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was taken to , where he is being treated for a gunshot wound and a police dog bite, reports said.
The man is suspected of shooting a woman through the door of a home in Ashland, near San Leandro, about a month ago, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The man also led officers on a car chase from Alameda to Oakland Airport a few weeks ago, according to the Contra Costa Times. He was driving up to 90 mph the wrong way on Airport Drive, when authorities chose to end the pursuit for public safety.
According to J.D. Nelson of Alameda County Sheriff's Office, deputies tried to contact the suspect at a home near the intersection of Grove Way and Queen Street on Tuesday afternoon. The suspect then ran into a black Honda and drove toward deputies, who then opened fire, Nelson said.
After crossing over Interstate 580, the suspect got out of his car and hopped a backyard fence into a residence on the 20600 block of Center Street, witnesses told Castro Valley Patch.
"We were minding our own (business) watching a movie when we heard a loud pop," said Jake Croghan, who lives at the residence.
Croghan then said he saw the suspect in his backyard, crawling underneath his deck.
Croghan then locked his doors and vacated his residence to call police, who quickly surrounded the area. After police sent in a K9 dog, who ended up biting the suspect, the man was then arrested.
Witnesses told Castro Valley Patch that the suspect was taken away on a stretcher, and that another woman was seen being handcuffed near the residence where the suspect was arrested.
