BART to Offer Safety Escorts at Fruitvale Station Friday Evening

Holiday shoppers arriving at the Fruitvale Station between 5 and 8 p.m. can ask to be escorted to their vehicles parked within a three-block radius of the station. Escorts will also be available at the Bay Fair and West Oakland stations.

BART will offer safety escorts to riders at the Fruitvale Station on Friday, Dec. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m., Bay Area Rapid Transit District officials announced today (Wednesday).

It's part of an effort to protect passengers during the holiday shopping season, according to a BART press release.

The safety escorts will be available to accompany BART customers to their cars parked within a three-block radius of the station.

Safety escorts will also be provided at the West Oakland and Bay Fair stations at the same time. At West Oakland Station there will also be two designated patrol vehicles to provide rides to those who do not want to walk in the dark.

Oakland and San Leandro police are assisting with the program.

To find an escort to your car, look for an officer in uniform or a police cadet, Explorer, problem solving officer, police service technician or volunteer wearing a yellow safety vest.

Officers will also give out materials with safety travel tips to help empower passengers to better protect themselves while traveling the BART system and within their community, the press release said.
