Bike Cop Arrests Theft Suspect from Alameda, Recovers Handgun
Tipped to a store theft in progress on Washington Avenue in San Leandro, the officer apprehended two suspects as they were leaving the store and disarmed one of them, a woman.
A San Leandro police officer on bicycle patrol on Washington Avenue collared two alleged thieves as they were leaving a store, and confiscated the loaded firearm that a female suspect — an Alameda resident — had tucked into her waistband, police said.
The incident occured about 4 pm Tuesday on the 1400 block of Washington Avenue, north of Juana Avenue.
According to a police statement, a store employee told the officer about a theft in progress inside the store.

The officer collared the suspects as they left the store. They were detained for theft. Store merchandise recovered during the arrest was returned.
During the apprehension, a loaded firearm was recovered from the female's waistband where it had been concealed, police said.

The suspects in custody are Sharon Montano, 21, of Alameda and Ismael Acosta, 27, of Oakland.
"At face value this appeared to be a simple theft and we are fortunate our officer's sound tactics led to the safe recovery of a loaded firearm," said Lt. Randall Brandt.
