Black Friday: Shopper Shot During Attempted Robbery at Walmart; One Suspect in Custody

Victim in critical but stable condition.

Bay City News Service — Black Friday turned violent at  in San Leandro early this morning when a man was shot during an attempted robbery, police said.

Police received a report of a fight in front of the Walmart at 15555 Hesperian Blvd. around 1:50 a.m. Officers who had been patrolling near the parking lot went to the center parking lot aisle near the front of the store where they found a gunshot victim and the victim's family members detaining a possible suspect, police said.

According to a report on KTVU, three suspects in a black Volvo pulled their car behind the victim's parking spot and blocked it in, then tried to rob them.

When the shoppers refused to give up their purchases, one of them, a man, was shot. According to the KTVU report, the victim and his companions went after the suspects but two got away.

It is unknown if the arrested man was the shooter.

The Hesperian Boulevard Walmart listed its doors opening Thursday night at 10 p.m. for early Black Friday shopping and deals. San Leandro police Sgt. Mike Sobek told reporters at the scene this morning it was a "robbery gone bad."

Walmart parking lot entrances were reportedly blocked by numerous police cars at 4 a.m. after the shooting, a clerk said from the Big 5 Sporting Goods across the street.

According to posts on Twitter, as of 7:30 a.m. the store has been reopened.
