Update: Police Investigating Suicide After Body Found on Crown Beach

The body found in the water at Crown Beach Wednesday morning was that of Alameda resident Paul Chiu, 28, of Alameda, according the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

Update, Jan. 24, 1 p.m.: The death of a man whose body was found along the Alameda shoreline on Wednesday morning is being investigated as a suicide, according to the Bay City News Service.

The Alameda County coroner's bureau has identified the man whose body was found at Crown Beach Wednesday as 28-year-old Alameda resident Paul Chiu.

His body was found by a man walking at Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach about 10 a.m., near where Westline and Shoreline drives meet, according to Alameda police Lt. Ted Horlbeck.

The body showed no obvious signs of injury or trauma, a coroner's representative said Wednesday night. An autopsy was planned for this morning.

Hurlbeck said Chiu's body had been about 50 feet from shore when first spotted by the pedestrian but had moved close to land by the time police and fire personnel got there.

It was believed that the body had been in the water for about six hours, Hurlbeck said.
