Christmas Day Jewel Thieves Caught In San Leandro

An Alameda man and an accomplice from Oakland who allegedly broke into a store drove down a cul-de-sac into the nearby residential neighborhood and got nabbed.

Two men, one from Alameda and the other from Oakland, are in jail today after police chased their vehicle from the Kmart Store in San Leandro into a residential neighborhood where they drove down a dead end and were arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary.

The case began at 4:57 am Christmas morning, when police received multiple alarms from inside the inside Kmart Store at 250 Floresta Boulevard.

When officers arrived on scene, they saw a vehicle parked along the side of the store with its lights on. As officers approached the suspect vehicle sped into the nearby Floresta Gardens neighborhood with police in pursuit.

Police say the driver of the vehicle, apparently unfamiliar with the area, drove into a cul de sac.  When the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger fled on foot but was caught by a pursuing officer moments later. The driver, who remained inside the vehicle, was detained immediately.

Inside the vehicle officer say they discovered thousands of dollars worth of jewelry. Officers at Kmart discovered a forced point of entry in the store's garden area along the southeast side of the building.  They later discovered a jewelry case inside the store had been pried open.

Both occupants of the vehicle were arrested for commercial burglary.

They are: Quan Tran, 36, of Alameda, and Edward Tam, 40, of Oakland.
