Heroic Alameda Man Receives Award from Police Chief

Brian Grappo aided an APD officer in a violent confrontation and helped detain a suspect.

Alameda resident Brian Grappo was honored by the Alameda Police Department today, Thursday, for his actions in helping an APD officer last month.

Here's how the APD described the incident in a bulletin today:

"In the early afternoon of January 4th, 2013, Officer Miele attempted to contact a local resident who is known for drug sales and currently on probation. The suspect led Officer Miele on a short foot pursuit.

"When the officer caught up to him, the suspect turned the contact into a violent confrontation. Local resident Brian Grappo was in the area walking his dog when he happened upon the struggle.

"Recognizing the officer’s need for assistance, Grappo set aside his own safety and chose to intervene. After an additional struggle, Officer Miele and Grappo managed to detain the suspect long enough for backup officers to arrive and take the suspect into custody."

APD Chief Mike Noonan recognized Grappo for his "valiant and selfless actions" in a short ceremony today.

"Mr. Grappo was heroic, his actions are what make serving the citizens of Alameda rewarding," he said.

As Grappo received his award, he said that if he were faced with the same circumstances again, he would act in the same manner, according to the bulletin.
