An Alameda man was robbed of his cellphone by another man who followed him off an AC Transit bus, according to the Alameda Police Department. Both men exited the bus when it stopped at the corner of Santa Clara Avenue and Willow Street April 30 about 11:15 a.m.
The victim was walking and talking on the 1500 block of Willow when the robber approached him and reached for the phone, said APD Lt. Ted Horlbeck. After a brief struggle, the robber knocked the phone from the victim's hand, grabbed it and fled east on Santa Clara, Horlbeck said.
The victim was not injured, Horlbeck said.
Shorepoint Fire Aftermath
A woman who was one of several people burned out of their homes in a Dec. 17, 2011 fire at a Shorepoint Court apartment complex has been victimized again, Horlbeck said.
He said fire victims were not allowed back into their units but were able to hire a specialized private company to retrieve some of their belongings. When one resident checked through her retrieved property, she found that jewelry was missing from a jewelry box, he said. The theft was reported May 1.
Alameda police arrested a local high school student on suspicion of vandalism last week after a witness reported a male juvenile spraypainting graffiti on the grounds of a Shoreline Drive complex, Horlbeck said.
He said the student confessed to eight incidents of graffiti vandalism throughout the city in March and April.
However, it does not appear that this suspect is responsible for recent graffiti at the Alameda Theater, Horlbeck said.
Prescription Drugs Take-Back Day
Alameda police collected 345 pounds of of unwanted medications last weekend at a drive-up in the parking lot between the police department and City Hall, an APD spokesperson said. That was nearly three times what the department collected at a take-back day last October, when local residents turned in 130 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs.
