One person was stabbed and another robbed with a box cutter during a brief one-man crime spree in an Alameda shopping center this afternoon, Friday, according to police.

A stabbing and a bank robbery were reported in quick succession shortly after 1 p.m. today at the Marina Village shopping center, Alameda Lt. Lance Leibnitz said.

Officers located the stabbing victim sitting in a car and determined that he had been stabbed by an acquaintance who had been a passenger in the car. They obtained a description of the suspect from the victim.

Meanwhile, officers spoke to officials in a nearby Chase bank where the reported robbery had occurred, and obtained a suspect description there. The descriptions in both cases matched and officers determined the suspect was probably the same man in both cases, Leibnitz said.

It appears that the suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, had initially got out of the car, entered the bank and returned to the car, but an argument between the two men ensued and ended with the driver being stabbed, Leibnitz said.

Police said the suspect then got out of the car, went back into the bank and handed the teller a demand letter asking for money.

The teller refused, but the suspect then pulled a box cutter on a male customer, and demanded money from him. The customer initially complied with the suspect's demands, but then struggled with the suspect.

The suspect fled the bank, and police detained him a few hundred yards away.

The driver of the car was taken to Highland Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening wounds, and the customer in the bank suffered a superficial wound to the back of the neck, Leibnitz said.

The suspect received minor injuries in the scuffle with the customer. He is being treated at Alameda Hospital and has been arrested, Leibnitz said.
