Police Arrest Pair for Series of Burglaries, Recover Stolen Gun

Units at Central Self Storage on Sherman Street were burglarized three times in the last two months of 2013.

Alameda police took two San Leandro residents into custody today (Thursday) in connection with a series of self-storage facility burglaries and recovered one of several stolen guns, an Alameda Police Department spokesperson said.

Lt. Jill Ottaviano said the two are suspected of breaking into three units at Central Self Storage, 1913 Sherman St., and stealing a significant amount of private property, including 14 handguns.

One burglary took place between Nov. 6 and Nov. 17, 2013, while the others occurred on Dec. 16 and Dec. 18, 2013, she said. Two of the burglarized units were rented by one person.

Ottaviano said police identified the suspects with the help of surveillance video.

She said arrest warrants were issued for the two suspects, and Lawrence Edward Baslee, 58, was taken into custody Thursday morning in the 1500 block of 162nd Street in San Leandro. He was arrested on suspicion of three counts of burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

One of the stolen handguns was recovered during Thursday's arrest and search process, Ottaviano said.

Lynne Marie Evaro, 51, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon in the same block. She was held on suspicion of two counts of burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance, Ottaviano said.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office assisted with the arrests.

Detective Tom Cobb of the APD's property crimes unit was the lead investigator on the case.
