Police Chase of Stolen Car Winds Up in Alameda

Thief eludes police after abandoning car.

Bay City News Service—A brief chase through Alameda County Thursday evening ended in Alameda when authorities were unable to find a suspect who abandoned a stolen vehicle and entered an unknown home, an Alameda County Sheriff's sergeant said.

The pursuit started at 7:06 p.m.in unincorporated San Leandro on Foothill Boulevard when deputies spotted a stolen Honda Civic from Berkeley,  Sgt. Kyle Ritter said.

Authorities chased the man in the stolen vehicle through Oakland and into Alameda. The chase ended 16 miles later at 7:19 p.m. near Stanford Street and Clement Avenue in Alameda when the driver fled from the car on foot and ran into one of the houses on the block, Ritter said witnesses told  authorities.

Alameda police assisted in the chase that ended in their jurisdiction, Alameda police Sgt. Darin Tsujimoto said.

Authorities were uncertain which house the suspect had entered and no one was taken into custody.

The stolen car was recovered and the California Highway Patrol towed it away from the scene, Ritter said.
