Police ID Driver in Fernside Hit-and-Run Incident

Police say the incident did not appear to involve driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, although the cause is still under investigation.

Alameda police on Wednesday identified the driver involved in a series of hit-and-run collisions with parked cars on Fernside Boulevard and Windsor Drive Monday afternoon as Rickey Adams, 33, of San Jose.

The cause of the accidents is still under investigation, but at this point it appears that neither alcohol nor illegal drugs were involved, according to Interim Police Chief Paul Rolleri.

Adams was arrested on suspicion of driving with a suspended license and multiple counts of hit-and-run driving, Rolleri said.

Adams was cited and given a notice to appear in court rather than taken into custody because all the charges are misdemeanors, Rolleri said.

He said citing and releasing is standard practice when someone arrested on suspicion of one or more misdemeanors — which are considered less serious crimes than felonies — meets four requirements:

  • The arrested person has valid identification
  • There are no outstanding warrants
  • The person is not under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • And there is no indication that an illegal activity is likely to continue if the person is not taken into custody.
Adams was reportedly driving a Dodge Ram pickup when he hit two parked vehicles on Fernside Boulevard about 5:40 p.m. on Sept. 9, then circled the block and collided with several more parked cars on Windsor Drive.

Adams was hospitalized after the incident, but no other injuries were reported, according to police.
