Police Log: Alameda Woman Interrupts Burglar

Incidents of interest from the Alameda Police Department log, Sept. 7-10.

A woman who had been gardening at her home in the 1000 block of Armitage Street walked back into the house about 5:20 p.m. on Sept. 7 and interrupted a burglar, an Alameda Police Department spokesman said.

Lt. Ted Horlbeck said the burglar, who had entered the house through an unlocked window, fled without taking anything. The victim was not injured, he said.

In a second home break-in, a group of youths forced open the front door of a residence on Stardust Place on Sept. 8 and took items from a purse, Horlbeck said. Several people in the home at the time hid in a back bedroom during the incident, and one of them, a teenage girl, jumped out a second-story window to escape, he said. The girl was hospitalized for observation but did not have major injuries, he said.

Horlbeck said three suspects were arrested: Jobie Morton, 18, and two 15-year-olds.

The victims and suspects knew one another and had a minor conflict earlier in the day, Horlbeck said.

Foot Chase on St. Charles Street

Police arrested Jeremy Orian Nash, 26, of Alameda after a brief foot chase in the 1700 block of St. Charles Street about 10 p.m. on Sept. 9, Horlbeck said.

He said Nash saw a police officer nearby, threw a Slim Jim (a tool used to break into vehicles) on the ground and began running, but soon stopped. Police retraced Nash's steps and found the Slim Jim, a ball peen hammer and suspected cocaine, he said.

Nash was arrested on suspicion of possession of cocaine and possession of burglary tools and booked into the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland, Horlbeck said.

Auto Thefts

Although auto thefts have been on the decline recently, five vehicle thefts were reported over the weekend, Horlbeck said. They included vehicles stolen from the 1100 block of Ballena Boulevard, the 200 block of Shoreline Drive, the 700 block of Eagle Avenue, the 1400 block of High Street and the 1700 block of Clement Avenue. In the Clement Avenue incident, the victim's keys had been left in plain sight while she was working. The thief took the keys and then the victim's vehicle, which was parked outside.

A truck that had been stolen in San Francisco was found on Minturn Street.

Other Thefts and Burglaries

Someone broke the front passenger-side window of a vehicle parked in the 1200 block of McKay Avenue on Sept. 8 and stole a purse.

A burglar pried open a lock on a boat at the Alameda Marina, 1815 Clement Ave., and stole radar equipment. The theft was reported on Sept. 10.

Also on Sept. 10, a thief stole a catalytic converter from a vehicle parked in the sales lot at Diamond Auto Sales, 1801 Park St.

Unlocked bicycles were stolen from a ground-floor balcony in the 300 block of Westline Drive on Sept. 10.
