Two teenage boys were taken into custody by police Tuesday afternoon after they attempted to rob an Encinal High School student outside the school, an Alameda Police Department spokesman said.
Lt. Ted Horlbeck said a group of youths approached a girl at Central Avenue and Third Street shortly before 1 p.m. and tried to remove a chain she was wearing but fled when the victim's friends intervened. Police located two of the boys, one from Alameda and one from Oakland, who were identified by witnesses, Horlbeck said.
He said the victim, an EHS student, reported that one of the robbers had a gun, but police did not find a weapon.
No Shots Fired
Rumors of shooting during an arrest near the intersection of Park Street and Otis Drive on Wednesday morning were greatly exaggerated, Horlbeck said.
He said the noise heard by witnesses to a police scuffle with an intoxicated person about 10 a.m. was actually the sound of a bottle breaking.
Witnesses who alerted several media outlets to the incident said they saw a police officer with his gun drawn and heard what sounded like a gunshot as police wrestled the suspect to the ground.
But no shots were fired, Horlbeck said.
