Police Log: Shoplifter Attacks Security Guard, Purse Snatchers Chase and Hit Woman

The last days of 2013 saw several robberies and auto thefts in Alameda.

Incidents highlighted here were recorded in the Alameda Police Department log Dec. 28-31. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

SATURDAY, DEC. 28

Narcotics arrest — A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale after he was searched by police at 1:17 a.m. in the 2300 block of San Antonio Avenue. The man had 15 capsules of suspected MDMA in his possession, police said.

Drunk driving arrests — A 43-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop at 1:43 a.m. in the 2300 block of Encinal Avenue. In a separate incident, a 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated following a collision near the corner of Willow Street and Lincoln Avenue at 11:37 p.m.

Auto burglaries — Someone broke into at least three vehicles in the 500 block of Buena Vista Avenue during the night. In a separate incident, someone broke a side window of a vehicle in the 1300 block of Ballena Boulevard and stole personal property.

Robbery arrest — A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and violating his probation after he took items from a store in the Bridgeside Shopping Center, 2351 Blanding Ave., and left the premises without paying for them, police said. Store security guards confronted the man outside the business, and the man punched one of the guards in the face, they said. The guards were able to handcuff the man and hold him until police arrived.

SUNDAY, DEC. 29

Thefts from vehicles — Personal property was stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked in the 3200 block of Thompson Avenue. In a separate incident, the rear license plate was stolen from a vehicle parked in the 300 block of Brush Street.

Auto thefts — Vehicles were reported stolen from the 2500 block of Webb Avenue and the 1300 block of Fountain Street.

Fraud — In a telephone scam, a caller convinced the victim to activate an an electronic cash card using funds from the cash register at the victim's business and obtained account information for the cash card.

MONDAY, DEC. 30

Residential burglaries — A burglar removed a screen from a window of a home in the 500 block of Buena Vista Avenue, opened the window and stole personal property. In a separate incident, someone cut a screen and broke a window of a home in the 1100 block of Sand Beach Place but did not enter the home.

Auto recovery — A vehicle reported stolen in San Leandro was located in the 3000 block of Main Street.

Attempted auto theft — Someone tried unsuccessfully to steal a vehicle parked in the 2400 block of Webb Avenue but did succeed in stealing some items from the vehicle.

Robbery — A 42-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of robbery and violating probation after taking three packages from the porch of a home in the 1800 block of Santa Clara Avenue. shortly before 7 p.m. Police said one of the victims confronted the woman, who tried to hit the victim before fleeing on foot. The suspect was captured a few blocks away.

Auto theft — A car was stolen from the 1600 block of China Clipper Lane.

Robbery — Robbers stole purses from two female victims who were walking near the corner of San Antonio Avenue and Union Street about 6:30 p.m. Police said two suspects grabbed a bag from one victim and chased the second victim down the street and hit her before taking her purse. The pair of robbers drove away in a vehicle that contained two other suspects, police said.

TUESDAY, DEC. 31

Auto theft — A vehicle was stolen from the 2000 block of Buena Vista Avenue.

Thefts from vehicles — In separate incidents, items were stolen from vehicles parked in the 1800 block of Grand Street and on Eagle Avenue.

Grand theft — A cell phone was stolen in an incident in the 1800 block of St. Charles Street about 7:30 p.m.
