Police Log: Burglars Hit 4 Homes, Dog Bites Man Poking It in the Eye

Incidents highlighted here were recorded in the Alameda Police Department log from Aug. 21 to Aug. 28. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21

Vehicle burglaries — Alameda police received reports of a half dozen auto break-ins around town, including several where a windshield or window was broken. Locations included the 300 block of Central Avenue (broken rear windshield), 400 block of Central Avenue (broken passenger-side window), 300 block of Lina Avenue (broken window), 900 block of Shorepoint Court, corner of Eighth Street and Santa Clara Avenue, 100 block of Haight Avenue (no apparent loss).

Tipsy in public — Three men were arrested on suspicion of public intoxication in separate incidents between 1:29 and 3:18 a.m. 

Vehicle thefts — Vehicles were reported stolen from the 300 block of Westline Drive (motorcycle) and the 1400 block of Ninth Street (auto).

Shoplifting — A 33-year-old man was placed under citizen's arrest by the owner of South Shore Liquors, on suspicion of petty theft. In the 2300 block of Santa Clara Avenue, a suspect fled with an item without paying for it and was not located by police. In a third incident, someone loaded a shopping cart with Red Bull at the Lucky supermarket on Marina Village Parkway and left the store without paying for the energy drinks.

Dog bite — A dog bite was reported in the 1000 block of Pacific Avenue. Police said the victim had provoked the bite by poking the dog in the eye while drunk.

Stolen bikes — Bicycles were stolen from Marina Village and the 700 block of Santa Clara Avenue.

Residential burglary — An apartment in the 1100 block of Park Avenue was burglarized.

THURSDAY, AUG. 22

DUI arrest — A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after failing to perform satisfactorily on field sobriety tests at a DUI checkpoint on Park Street at 10:40 p.m.

FRIDAY, AUG. 23

Auto theft — A vehicle was reported stolen from the 1000 block of Mound Street.

SATURDAY, AUG. 24

DUI arrests — Police arrested several people on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in separate incidents. They included a 43-year-old man arrested in the 200 block of Central Avenue following a collision; a 23-year-old man arrested after he allegedly threw a bottle at another person's vehicle, damaging the side mirror; a 46-year-old man who was also arrested on suspicion of child endangerment because a young nephew was sitting in the front passenger seat, according to police; and a 22-year-old woman arrested near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Chestnut Street.

Auto thefts and recovery — Vehicles were reported stolen from the 300 block of Westline Drive and the 1300 block of Ballena Boulevard. A vehicle reported stolen in Oakland was recovered by police on Westline Drive.

SUNDAY, AUG. 25

DUI arrests — A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license after reportedly speeding o Blanding Avenue. A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a collision in the 2000 block of Constitution Way.

Auto theft — A vehicle was stolen from the 2000 block of Eagle Avenue.

Shopping cart —A 52-year-old man was found to be in unlawful possession of a shopping cart on Park Street.

Bike thefts — Bicycles were reported stolen from the unlocked laundry room of an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Santa Clara Avenue.

MONDAY, AUG. 26

Vehicle pursuit — Police attempted a traffic enforcement stop in the 2000 block of Oakland Street, but the driver sped away. The pursuit was ended when the fleeing vehicle crossed the Park Street Bridge into Oakland.

Auto theft — A vehicle was reported stolen from the 2000 block of Shoreline Drive.

ID theft — Someone used a Crist Street resident's credit card number to make unauthorized purchases.

Battery — A victim was kicked and punched by an unknown person in the rear of the Arco gas station at 1260 Park St. about 9:30 p.m.

TUESDAY, AUG. 27

Residential burglary — A burglar entered a home in the 1200 block of Sherman Street through the unlocked front door about 8:30 a.m. and stole a vehicle key, a laptop computer and the contents of the resident's wallet.

Vandalism — Someone punctured tires on a vehicle parked in the 200 block of Corpus Christi Road.

Shoplifting — A 50-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of petty theft at South Shore Center. The Kohl's security guard who made the citizen's arrest told police the woman concealed merchandise and then left the store without paying.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 28

Auto burglary — Someone shattered a window of a vehicle parked in the 2100 block of Otis Drive and stole various items.

Residential burglary — Someone entered a residence in the 2000 block of Sandcreek Way through a rear sliding glass door and stole several items.

Another residential burglary — A burglar entered a home in the 2500 block of Buena Vista Avenue through an unlocked window and stole money.
