Suspicious Restaurant Fire Shuts Down Santa Clara Avenue

Santa Clara Avenue, between Park and Oak Street, will remain closed the rest of the morning according to an Alameda Fire Department official.

A suspicious fire caused almost $450,000 in damages to a Santa Clara Avenue restaurant this morning.

Multiple callers reported smoke coming from the building of the American Oak restaurant on the 2300 block of Santa Clara Avenue starting at 6:16 a.m. according to Fire Capt. Jim Colburn.

Firefighters forced entry into the restaurant and were able to save the building. However, a lot of damage was done inside, according to Colburn. He said around $250,000 worth of damage was estimated for the structure and $200,000 worth of damages to the contents inside.

"It appears that the fire started in multiple areas so it's deemed suspicious," Colburn said.

No injuries were reported and the fire is further being investigated.

Santa Clara Avenue between Oak Street and Park Street will remain closed most of the morning Colburn said.

He added that this is the fourth fire APD has dealt with the last five days.

I'm sure any minute now the usual idiots will chime in with their:
"I ate there once last year and they overcooked my burger!!!" and "I hope they re-open the place as a raw organic salad bar!!!" Please remember that ~20 of your fellow Alamedans just lost their jobs two weeks before Xmas.

Ah, fixed that.. the fourth that they've dealt with in Alameda.

This is insane!!! I am so so sorry my AO friends!!!

Terrible news! American Oak is one of the best restaurants around. Here's hoping they can reopen before too long.

Talk about a real rustic and oaky smell...
Barbara C December 9, 2012 at 12:35 am
Were all the fires "suspicious?" were they all restaurants? Sorry to see AO suffer this loss - great bar, great food, great staff.

Not to pick nits but ok, shouldn't the headline read: "suspicious fire shuts American Oak restaurant"? That's the real news, not the street closing. As someone mentioned, this is the only restaurant out of the 4 recent fires. I don't understand the need for headlines that hide germane info that may cause you to read further and not skip over the article. BTW this is a topic often discussed about online media these days, the art of headline writing...
Dixie Jordan (Editor) December 9, 2012 at 01:03 pm
Not to nitpick either, but I believe the story originally ran when the fire or immediate aftermath was still going on - and at that point the news WAS the closure of Santa Clara Ave. Then it was updated later when more details, such as the name of the restaurant, were known. Sometimes there's technical stuff that makes it awkward to update a headline.

The only good thing about this tragedy is it sounds like the arsonist wasn't very bright. Hopefully that means that investigators will be able to figure out their identity quickly before anyone is hurt from the person repeating this type of crime.

Worked in 3 countries , in the hotel and restaurant industry , for well over 30 years and never ever had a single fire . actually since 1964 ....
Restaurants don't burn just like that period . If one ever try to get set it on fire during working hours it take a lot of good will and perseverance . when it is closed for 6 hours plus , it is impossible unless you have an elecrical short, you do not have electrical short at multiple location in the same time ..... Lot of time it is blamed on deep fryer , well they are are equiped for over 30- years in the US no to reach the flash point , far from it . In the ols days they used "sterno" jellyfied alcohol , the manufacturer added a trascer under US Fire marshall guidance , another one was to fill light bulb with alcohol or acetone . Show the accounting book and you will get an answer very fast one way or the other . Revenge from competitors has also been a motive in many cases . Restautasnts are harder to burn than any other business , because most of the equipment is steel . It remind me "le Beau Rivage"........

Some people are just mean. I am sorry for the employees and owners, at this time of year, yet there is never a good time for a tragedy like this

Any news on the arson investigation? I'm thinking that the fire investigators will be able to solve this one pretty quickly. One arsonist will not be singing "I'll be home for Christmas".
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) December 12, 2012 at 06:40 pm
Jenna, AFD will update us once any new info arises from this.
Jon Spangler January 1, 2013 at 04:40 pm
Jenna, friends of mine in AFD told me that a thorough arson investigation, which involves extensive and complicated chemical testing, usually takes several weeks or more, depending on the nature of the fire.
The good news is that arson investigators, with the help of sophisticated labs, can find out almost every detail of how and where a fire was set, which usually leads to finding out who set the fire(s).
Jenna January 2, 2013 at 02:37 pm
Jon, thanks for the technical information. I know there was an outpouring of fundraising efforts from the restaurant community, and we would all like to get this evil person out of our neighborhood.
Michael January 5, 2013 at 06:39 pm
Any update on this? There were two arson fires in downtown Alameda within a two week period. The other was at Alameda High.
Jenna January 5, 2013 at 06:52 pm
I didn't know there were two fires. Scary.

When they build that high density development on the Harbor Bay Club site with 25% low incomeRead More housing requirement, Bay Farm will be hearing a lot more gun shots at night.

So sad to see. Did you report this to East Bay Regional Park District? I provided the number in yourRead More last posting.
Lorraine Sarullo June 12, 2013 at 12:35 pm
Yes, I reported it to the EBRP staff who happened to be nearby at the beach. I also reported it toRead More the warden of Fish and Wildlife in Sacramento and the warden of the local territory. The local warden told me yesterday that he will be patrolling the area, but I did not get to speak to him today (only left both wardens a voicemail message).

Anonymous tip to the fire department?

Leaving a note to them is a bad idea if it really is a illegal operation. So many ways that can goRead More wrong. Just call the police dept. Leave a tip. Simple and safe.
Analisa Harangozo (Editor) June 13, 2013 at 09:03 am
Agree with Carol. Perhaps an anonymous tip to Alameda Fire or Alameda Police.

Given the targeted harvesting of parts, this is not a "times are hard and food is scarce"Read More issue. I contacted Crown Beach (part of the EBRP). They checked into the matter with Fish and WildlifeRead More (previously Fish and Game), to see if there was any wrongdoing. On the surface of things, it seems the wings (fins) are the edible part of the ray. And apparently, the way regulations are written it may not be even be considered littering! So, however inhumane, disrespectful, selfish, gruesome it may seem, there may not have been any fishing laws broken. Although, when I spoke with the warden of Fish and Wildlife he said he will be looking into the matter. To voice your opinion and propose changes to regulation, you can write a letter to and attend a Fish and Game Commission town hall meeting here is the link: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/contact/ and http://www.fgc.ca.gov/meetings/2013/index.aspx I plan on writing to suggest regulation against polluting public beaches with unused portions of the catch from fishing and also ask for recommendations on limiting the catch on fish that only have small percentage of edible parts (such as the rays). I would welcome any help in a letter writing campaign, the contact information is listed on the link provided above. Many Thanks.
