The man and woman apparently had previously been in a romantic relationship, police said.

Several people commented on Alameda Patch's Facebook page that they heard the shots Monday evening.

"Gun shots heard on corner of Walnut & Alameda Ave.," wrote one.

"A neighbor heard 4 gunshots," wrote another.

A woman, who parked in the area shortly after the shooting, wrote that she saw police enter a home and, later, she saw a coroner's van.

"[I] parked right near there on my way to a class tonight, saw a number of police rushing in to a house," she wrote. "When I left, a coroner's van was there and the area was still being monitored by police, one policeman standing out in front of the house, and it was all cordoned off with 'crime scene' tape."

Around 7:30 p.m. the Alameda Police Department tweeted that there was a "Police activity 2100 blk Alameda Ave" and advised residents to "avoid the area."

"The investigation is ongoing," McNiff said.
