Update: One Dead, Another Critically Injured in 880 Accident

Officials originally reported two deaths in a crash on I-880 late Thursday night, but are now reporting that one person survived and is being treated for major injuries at a hospital in Castro Valley.

Bay City News Service —  One person was killed and one was critically injured in a fatal crash on northbound Interstate Highway 880 in unincorporated Alameda County near San Lorenzo late Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. Thursday after a 1992 Honda, driven by a 35-year-old Hayward woman, had stopped in the far right lane of Highway 880 south of Hesperian Boulevard due to mechanical problems, the CHP said.

A CHP officer in the process of making a traffic stop spotted the disabled Honda and stopped in front of it to offer assistance. As the CHP officer was backing up toward the stopped vehicle, a passenger in the Honda, a second 35-year-old Hayward woman, got out of the vehicle.

As she was walking on the freeway, however, a second vehicle, a 2011 Chevrolet driven by a 58-year-old Alameda man, was moving into the right lane to exit at Hesperian Boulevard.

The Chevrolet's driver never saw the Honda stopped in the right lane and struck the car and the woman walking in the road, CHP officials said. The Chevrolet then side-swiped the CHP vehicle before coming to a halt.

The woman walking in the road was declared dead at the scene. As of Friday morning, her name has not yet been released by the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

CHP officials initially said two people had died in the crash, but later clarified that the driver of the Honda received major injuries and is on life support at  in Castro Valley.

The CHP officer and the driver of the Chevrolet were not injured.

The crash initially blocked all northbound lanes of the highway, and four of six lanes remained closed for nearly three hours during the investigation.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the investigation, officials said.
