Two Pedestrians in Critical Condition After Pair of Accidents

One accident happened Tuesday on Bay Farm Island, the second Thursday on Webster Street.

Two pedestrians are hospitalized in critical condition after a pair of traffic accidents this week, Alameda Police Sgt. Ron Simmons said Thursday afternoon.

In the first accident, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, a man got off a shuttle bus delivering him to his job at the Harbor Bay Business Park during early morning commute hours, Simmons said.

The man began crossing North Loop Road behind the shuttle and was hit by a car traveling east, Simmons said,

The driver, a woman who had just dropped her daughter off at work at the business park, was possibly partially blinded by the rising sun, he said.

The second accident happened today (Thursday) shortly after midnight at the corner of Webster Street and Atlantic Avenue, Simmons said.

A vehicle driven by a young woman approaching the Posey Tube struck a man who was crossing Webster from west to east, he said.

Although the pedestrian was in a crosswalk, he was crossing against a red light, Simmons said. The man was also wearing dark clothing, he said.

An independent witness confirmed details of the Webster Street accident, and the driver is cooperating with police, Simmons said.

Police have not released the names or ages of the two victims. The man struck on Webster Street is an Alameda resident, Simmons said, while the victim in the North Loop Road accident works in Alameda but lives elsewhere.

Both accidents are under investigation, and no decision on citing either driver will be made before the appropriate investigation is complete, Simmons said.
