Two woman are recovering after being injured when a lit barbecue exploded at Crown Memorial State Beach in Alameda Sunday afternoon, a fire captain said.

The explosion was reported at about 1:40 p.m. at the beach in the 600 block of Westline Drive, Alameda Fire Capt. James Colburn said. A cooking spray aerosol can was placed closed to a lit barbecue, resulting in the explosion, according to Colburn.

Two women - ages 66 and 45 - were injured by the blast. Firefighters arrived at the scene and provided medical care to the injured women, who were then airlifted to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, according to Colburn.

The 66-year-old woman is in stable condition. The younger woman was treated and released, Colburn said. It was initially reported that the women suffered life-threatening injuries in the explosion. No other injuries were reported.
