Five families have been displaced after what is believed to be an electrical fire that hit their Walnut Street apartment Friday afternoon.
Alameda Fire Department crews responded to a one-alarm fire on the 1500 block of Walnut Street around 2:01 p.m., according to Capt. Jim Colburn. He said arriving firefighters found a wall on fire inside the second floor apartment, with extension into the attic.
Crews were able to contain the fire to one unit of the apartment. Though no injuries were reported, five families of the apartment were displaced, Colburn said. The Red Cross was called to assist those families.
About $50,000 in damages were reported to the building and $10,000 to it's contents, Colburn said. The cause is believed to be electrical, and is still under investigation.
