Alameda Mayor Signs Letter Seeking Stronger Gun Control

Marie Gilmore joins scores of mayors in asking Obama to "make it harder for dangerous people to own guns."

Alameda Mayor Marie Gilmore signed a letter to President Obama Wednesday as part of a group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, calling for tighter gun control laws and other steps — notably appointing an official to fill a top enforcement post that has been vacant for six years..

The letter Gilmore signed noted that "the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), the federal agency responsible for enforcing our gun laws, has gone without a confirmed director for more than six years."

Gilmore's group sent out its note on the same day that the U.S. Conference of Mayors wrote to the President and Congress with a similar agenda that called for three specific actions:

  • Enact legislation to ban assault weapons and other high-capacity magazines being prepared by Senator Dianne Feinstein and others;
  • Strengthen the national background check system and eliminate loopholes in it; and
  • Strengthen the penalties for straw purchases of guns.

"We know that preventing gun violence – whether it is a mass shooting in a school or a murder on a street corner – will take much more than strengthening our gun laws," the Conference of Mayors letter says. "We need to reverse the culture of violence in our nation so that a violent act isn’t the first response to settling a difference or compensating for a wrong."

But gun control laws shouldn't wait for other improvements to happen first, the letter says.

The two letters come less than a week after a . It goes on to say that Congress should increase funding for mental health care and establish a commission to look at violence in the country as a whole.

The right to bear arms was not given to us so that we could go duck hunting. The right to bear arms was given to us so that we would have the ability to rise up and take back our Constitutional rights when the Government became corrupt and was acting outside of the powers that were given to them. The writers of the Constitution said it was our duty to do so.
There are many examples of Corruption. I will give you 1 example for arguments sake. We were given the freedom of information act. When Dr Shirley Moore and Richard Fine discovered and exposed that the L.A. Superior Court Judges were excepting money that was not authorized by LAW and Sturgeon vs. Los Angeles County 1 declared those payments to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL the Judges paid a lobbyist to pass SBX211 that granted themselves (Retro Active Immunity from Prosecution). When Government and Corporations are held to the same standards of the rule of LAW as the people are held. Then and only then could there be meaningful discussions about gun control. When Government stops taking money from the people and giving it to banks and corporations and prosecutes blatant acts of corruption then gun control could be an option. The presstitutes and politicians will paint the topic of gun control as being about duck and dear hunting.

Long overdue!
Paul Brewer December 20, 2012 at 01:15 pm
Yeah ....The vapid, repetitive, erroneous notion that enacting a LAW will solve this. It's worked great for eliminating littering...AND especially effective for stopping drugs.

Thank you Mayor Gilmore.

We should not have assault weapons on the street. Corruption exists to some degree everywhere in every organization and that will not be stopped with a gun - that takes a voice, bravery and persistence.
Thank you Mayor Gilmore.

Paul, you mean like the law that has done a great job keeping fully automatic weapons off the street? It seems to have done a bang up job since fully automatic weapons have only been used a few times in crimes since the 1930s. All we need to do is add a few more weapons to that list, like maybe all semi automatic weapons.
I don't care how big the magazine is that you put on a bolt action rifle, it's still a slow firing weapon.

Good for the Mayor.

More children were killed this year in Chicago by non assault weapons than Connecticut...and that was merely Chicago. I lament the violence and heartbreak, but suggest that the issue is vastly more multifaceted and complex and requires a deeper grasp of the issue than grandstanding politics. First perhaps mandatory 10 year minimum mandatory sentencing for any crime involving firearms (beginning with non injury robbery) and 30 years mandatory for a subsequent offense. Laws should apply to lawbreakers not law abiders.
paul english December 21, 2012 at 05:27 pm
Excellent ! But should we be selling semi-automatic weapons in Alameda? In light of the Newtown, Connecticut massacre, I would urge my fellow Alamedans to join me in signing a petition to Steven Miller, CEO of Big 5 Sporting Goods, which sells high powered, rapid fire weapons which can be easily reloaded and equipped with high capacity magazines at their South Shore store. According to Big 5, these weapons are an “ideal training tool for law enforcement, military personnel, and civilians.” Let’s make a start to limit these weapons, which can threaten our children, from falling into the hands of mentally-ill individuals and demand that they not be sold in Alameda! Please sign the petition at http://www.change.org/petitions/steven-g-miller-ceo-big-5-sporting-goods-stop-selling-semiautomic-weapons-at-big-5-in-alameda

Paul,
I respect what you are trying to do, but you are scaring parents and you are scaring children. Big 5 does not sell high powered, rapid fire weapons. They have hunting and sporting rifles there. The rifles they sell that are "military looking" is cosmetic only, since California has an assault weapons ban, and the average hunting rifle is more lethal. Facts and the truth are important in this debate. You are being less than truthful when you are telling Alamedans a local store is selling high powered, rapid fire weapons. Look at the comments in your petition and the misinformation is obvious. People are calling for Big 5 in Alameda to stop selling large ammunition magazines, automatic weapons and assault weapons -- all illegal in CA. This just upsets me because we need real gun control in this country and this is hurting the cause.
Paul Brewer December 23, 2012 at 08:33 pm
Gun control is part of the answer and the issue is, again about more than availability....can we also add societal ? And can we also add that this nation largely fails in legislating behavior and morality ? If we could find a "one size fits all" solution and simply flip a switch as many seem to think, then well and good.
Since when am I scaring anyone ? You speak about "facts and truth" ...which I am illuminating. And children do not need a power point demonstration, but appropriate to age, deserve facts and truth....not to mention a cohesive family and sense of love and security.....which I might suggest would eliminate much of the slaughter this nation suffers. I have no problem with protests, but the situation and solutions have more holes than swiss cheese.

Paul Brewer, my reply was to Paul English, not you. I agree with your posts.

Thanks Reuben; good points. I'm a public health professional and have just started to educate myself on the gun issue. I appreciate your comments.

So sad to see. Did you report this to East Bay Regional Park District? I provided the number in yourRead More last posting.
Lorraine Sarullo June 12, 2013 at 12:35 pm
Yes, I reported it to the EBRP staff who happened to be nearby at the beach. I also reported it toRead More the warden of Fish and Wildlife in Sacramento and the warden of the local territory. The local warden told me yesterday that he will be patrolling the area, but I did not get to speak to him today (only left both wardens a voicemail message).

I contacted Crown Beach (part of the EBRP). They checked into the matter with Fish and WildlifeRead More (previously Fish and Game), to see if there was any wrongdoing. On the surface of things, it seems the wings (fins) are the edible part of the ray. And apparently, the way regulations are written it may not be even be considered littering! So, however inhumane, disrespectful, selfish, gruesome it may seem, there may not have been any fishing laws broken. Although, when I spoke with the warden of Fish and Wildlife he said he will be looking into the matter. To voice your opinion and propose changes to regulation, you can write a letter to and attend a Fish and Game Commission town hall meeting here is the link: http://www.fgc.ca.gov/contact/ and http://www.fgc.ca.gov/meetings/2013/index.aspx I plan on writing to suggest regulation against polluting public beaches with unused portions of the catch from fishing and also ask for recommendations on limiting the catch on fish that only have small percentage of edible parts (such as the rays). I would welcome any help in a letter writing campaign, the contact information is listed on the link provided above. Many Thanks.
