AUSD Hires New Chief Business Officer

Robert Clark, currently an assistant superintendent with the Burlingame School District, will fill the position left vacant by the resignation of former Chief Business Officer Robert Shemwell last August.

The Alameda Unified School District is hiring a former teacher with a doctorate in education as its chief business officer, according to a district press release.

Robert Clark, currently assistant superintendent-chief business officer for the Burlingame School District, will begin his new job in early January, 2014. His hiring was approved by the AUSD Board of Education Nov. 19.

The position has been vacant since the resignation of Robert Shemwell in August, 2013.

At the Burlingame district, Clark's responsibilities have included managing payroll, purchasing, and technology; supervising BSD’s Maintenance and Operations department; chairing the district’s negotiations team; and working with the Burlingame Community Education Foundation, according to the release.

During his tenure with BSD, Clark also managed a bond program for school modernization and construction, in addition to helping the district pass two parcel taxes and a general obligation bond.

Clark received his master’s in education from San Francisco State University and his doctorate in education from the University of La Verne, the AUSD announcement said.

“Dr. Clark’s depth and breadth of experience with school district administration makes him an excellent fit for AUSD at this time,” said Superintendent of Schools Kirsten Vital. “We are very excited to have him as part of the AUSD team.”

Niel Tam, president of the AUSD board, said, “We feel very fortunate to find someone who has not only worked in so many areas of administration, but also has experience with facilities bonds. The timing is perfect, as we’re just beginning our own Facilities Master Plan process.”

A former teacher and administrator in elementary and middle schools, Clark lives in Oakland with his husband and two Labroodles.

"I'm thrilled to be part of the AUSD team and looking forward to hitting the ground running in January,” he says.
