City Officials Approve Fee Increases for Parking Meters and Violations

The rate increases aim to help offset anticipated shortfalls in the city's budget. New parking rates and most of the new parking violation fees go up starting July 1.

City of Alameda officials recently approved fee increases for parking meters and violations throughout the city as a way to help offset anticipated shortfalls in the city's budget, The Oakland Tribune reports.

Increasing parking rates is expected to bring in $375,000 and raising the penalties for parking violations will provide an additional $380,000 to the city's General Fund, according to The Oakland Tribune.

New parking rates and most of the new parking violation fees go up starting July 1.
 
All meters and kiosks, such as the ones in the Webster Street Business District, that are currently set at hourly rates of 50 cents and will be raised to $1.

Meters and kiosks currently at an hourly rate of $1 will be raised to $1.50.

The meter rates in municipal lots A (behind Bank of Alameda) and C (across the street from the Theatre) will be raised to $1.50 hour from the current 50 cents.

In addition, the hourly rate in the parking garage will be raised from 50 cents to 75 cents for up to 8 hours of parking with no overnight parking permitted. 

In addition to raising parking rates, the council also voted to increase penalties for parking violations, The Oakland Tribune reports.

The fine for an expired meter be raised to $45 from $38, and the fine for double-parking will be raised by $10 to $60, according to The Oakland Tribune.
