Council Schedules Public Workshops on Beach Drowning, City Budget, Labor Neogtiations

Meanwhile, the Alameda City Council meets in closed session Tuesday night to consider hiring a new city attorney.

City council watchers, mark your calendars — three public workshops on hot local topics are scheduled for this month and next. All workshops are on Tuesdays, tentatively at 7 p.m., and are separate from regularly scheduled meetings of the Alameda City Council. They are:

Sept. 27: Labor negotiations. Status of and information about negotiations with four bargaining units whose current employment contracts with the city expire at the end of 2011. The bargaining units represent "miscellaneous employees," including managerial staff; Alameda City Employees Association members, including clerical staff; civilian employees of the Alameda Police Department; and Alameda Municipal Power workers.

Oct. 11: Memorial Day drowning. Ruben Grijalva will discuss his of the at Crown Beach on Memorial Day. Grijalva is a former state fire marshal and now the CEO of a public safety consulting firm called FireChiefs.com

Oct. 25: City budget. City staff will discuss the , fiscal challenges facing the city and possible solutions.

City Attorney Selection: Also coming up — yet another non-public city council meeting devoted to . The council will meet in closed session tomorrow, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. in the third floor conference room (Room 360) at City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Ave.

This is the second closed session on hiring a city attorney since the three finalists for the position were interviewed by the council Aug. 30, so a decision may be coming.
