Election Watch: Final Line-Up for Council Race

Eight candidates for Alameda City Council seats filed their nomination papers by Thursday's deadline and have qualified for the Nov. 6 ballot, according to a final roster issued by City Clerk Lara Weisiger.

They are Stewart Chen, Tony Daysog, Jeff A. Cambra, Joana Darc Weber, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Gerard Valbuena Dumuk, Beverly J. Johnson (incumbent) and Jane Sullwold.

Cambra and Sullwold were the last two candidates to turn in their paperwork, filing their nomination papers Thursday, Aug. 9.

Two potential candidates who took out papers earlier, Leland Blandón Traiman and Karin Lucas, did not return them, thereby dropping out of the race.

The terms of current Councilmembers Doug deHaan and Beverly Johson expire in December 2012. In addition, Councilmember Rob Bonta is a candidate for the 18th Assembly District seat. If he wins that race, the third-place finisher would serve the remainder of Bonta's city council term, which expires in December 2014.

Incumbent City Auditor Kevin R. Kearney and incumbent City Treasurer Kevin Kennedy, both seeking reelection and both unopposed, have also qualified to appear on November's ballot, according to the City Clerk's office.
