Green Thumbs, Green Minds is growing at the Alameda Free Library. April 29th marks the grand opening of the new Gardening Tool Lending Library. People will be able to borrow gardening hand tools just like getting a book from the library. Alameda city residents will be able to check out up to five tools at a time and keep them for a week. The Library will open with forty-seven hand-held gardening tools of the highest quality. The Tool Lending Library is a companion to the Seed Library recently opened at the Main Library.
Green Thumbs, Green Minds started as collaboration between Ploughshares Nursery and the Library to provide monthly gardening workshops. The workshops proved so popular that both organizations decided to expand offerings with the generous funds from the Bay Area Library and Information System Innovations Funds Grant and the Doering Family Foundation.
The goals of this innovative program are to increase library usage and community involvement, increase food independence in Alameda, increase transmission of knowledge from one generation to the next, and increase the diversity of edible plant life and nurture strains suited to Alameda’s specific environment.
