Halt! Central and Chestnut Now an All-Way Stop

The City of Alameda's Public Works Department has installed new stop signs at the intersection.

Alameda's Public Works Department has installed two new stop signs on Central Avenue at Chestnut Street to make it an all-way stop at that intersection, according to an announcement from Deputy City Manager Alex Nguyen.

Here are the details, from Nguyen's press release:

In July a few Alameda residents representing their neighbors came to the City Council with a petition asking for the additional stops signs.

Public Works conducted a new traffic study in September, after school was back in session, and determined the need for the all-way stop.

“We are glad to make traffic safety improvements at that intersection,” said Matt Naclerio, public works director. “The traffic study demonstrated the need, and we just needed to notify all the neighbors before installing the signs.”

Sgt. Ron Simmons of the Alameda Police Department said, “This is a great thing! We have a lot of pedestrian traffic there and it’s also a thoroughfare for cars, so this should make a big difference.”

Simmons said that APD will monitor the intersection randomly while people get used to the new stop signs.
