Online Raffle to Support 'Let’s Move Alameda'

Alameda's Harbor Bay Club is supporting the efforts of a coalition of community groups to promote good eating and exercise habits for the city's young people.

An online raffle will raise money for Alameda's .

A project of a coalition of local agencies, including the Alameda Hospital, the Boys & Girls Club, Girl’s Inc. of the Island City, the Alameda Recreation and Park Department and the Alameda Youth Collaborative, "Let's Move Alameda" is a campaign to encourage the city's youth to develop healthier habits.

For as little as $5, participants may win one of six prizes provided by the Harbor Bay Club for an online raffle. Prizes include a one-year club membership, gift certificates for the spa and a private tennis assessment.

All proceeds from the raffle will go to "Let’s Move Alameda" to help fund the rewards and prizes provided to the Alameda youth participating in the program.

"The campaign emerged as a result of the 100 Best application process in 2010," said Cyndy Wasko, a member of the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth and Their Families and president of Alameda's Social Service Human Relations Board.

In 2010,  as one of the nation's  for young people because of the work the city, schools and community organizations do to support youth. 

"We realized that we could do even more as a community to promote healthy lifestyles," Wasko said.

So collaborative members joined with  to develop the program.

"It mirrors Michele Obama's Let’s Move America," said Jim Franz, a city staffer who works with the collaborative. "We're working to keep kids active this summer."

The goal is to encourage young people to do 60 minutes of activity, five days a week, during six weeks of summer. They can fill out an activity journal and earn prizes along the way. Participants can also earn prizes for going soda-free.

The drawing for the raffle will take place at the "Let’s Move Alameda Celebration" on Sept. 10. Participants do not need to be present at the event to win.
