Pedestrian Dies in I-880 Accident in Fruitvale

California Highway Patrol officers are searching for suspects in a hit-and-run accident that killed a 72-year-old man.

A pedestrian was killed in a when he was struck by a vehicle early Monday morning on southbound Interstate Highway 880 in in Oakland's Fruitvale district, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHP officers are searching for suspects in the hit-and-run that killed the 72-year-old man who was walking across I-880 in Oakland early this morning.

About six witnesses reported seeing the man crawling across I-880 just south of Park Street at about 12:30 a.m., CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau. The victim's name has not been released.

The crash closed the three southbound left lanes, which were reopened at about 2 a.m., Caggiano said.

The CHP has no information about the suspect vehicle that killed the man, he said. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call the Oakland CHP at 510-450-3821.
