Power Out on Bay Farm Tuesday for Repairs

Alameda Municipal Power was working to fix a damaged line that caused an three-hour outage to 64 homes on Bay Farm Sunday afternoon.

Alameda Municipal Power crews worked Tuesday to repair a power line on Bay Farm.

The line caused an outage to 64 homes late Sunday afternoon. Power went out around 5 p.m. and was restored before 8 p.m.

The impacted homes are on Gardenia, Dahlia, Begonia and Azalea drives as well as on one side of Island Drive for the homes numbered between 1000 and 1032.

"It was a piece of wire that failed," AMP's Bill Garvine said.

On Tuesday, after the holiday weekend, crews returned to make a more complete repair.

"On Sunday they did a temporary work-around, and now they're doing a permanent fix," Garvine said.

Initially AMP thought the repairs could be made in under two hours, starting at 11 a.m., but just before noon Garvine, who went door-to-door in the neighborhood alerting residents, said the damage was proving to be more extensive than they'd anticipated.

Twenty-three additional residences were also without power during the repair.

Garvine said that because the lines are in backyards and not accessible by the biggest pieces of equipment, that crew members are climbing poles.

"So it takes a little more time," he said.

Garvine reminded customers of the importance of being prepared for loss of power at any time. He had an additional piece of advice for residents during planned outages.

"If you've got an electric garage door opener it's a good idea to get your car out of the garage in case you need (or want) to go somewhere," Garvine said.

Power was restored around 2:15 p.m., Garvine said.
