Save the City Garage! Trim That Tree!

Alameda's Historical Advisory Board wants the city to take care of routine maintenance on the municipal garage behind City Hall.

The municipal garage behind City Hall needs some TLC, say members of Alameda's .

In a memo to the city council, Board Chair Dennis Owens is asking the city to pony up for routine maintenance of the garage: prune an overhanging coast live oak tree, sweep the roof and clean clogged downspouts. 

New gutters and external downspouts to lead water away from the building foundation and brick walls would be nice too, the memo says.

So would touching up windows with new paint and putty and repointing mortar joints. 

The board also recommends future seismic upgrades and repairs to some decorate architectural details, but the leaf-clogged roof is the most critical issue, according to the memo.

The city spent $28,000 in grant money last year for a report on the garage's historic significance and condition.
