Birds on the Nature Reserve at Alameda Point

Recent sightings of birds on the Nature Reserve at Alameda Point.

The 511-acres in the runway area, formerly slated to become a national wildlife refuge, was given a new name at the March 19, 2013 city council meeting.  The council unanimously passed a resolution placing a zoning designation of "Nature Reserve" on the VA's undeveloped area.

Some recently-sighted birds on the reserve include a Black-bellied Plover in breeding plumage that will soon be making the long flight to northern Alaska or Canada for its breeding season.

You can read more about the Nature Reserve resolution and view a photo gallery of bird sightings during March and April of this year in the latest blog post on the Alameda Point Environmental Report.
