Alameda High to Remain Open Wednesday Despite Threat

A school district spokesperson said it's a "personal decision" for each family whether their children should attend classes on Dec. 11.

Alameda High School will be open Wednesday, Dec. 11 — the date given in a graffiti-like threat to school safety written on the wall of a student bathroom — but it's "a personal decision for each family" whether their children should attend classes Wednesday, an Alameda Unified School District spokesperson said today (Tuesday).

After consulting with Alameda police, school officials don't consider the threat credible enough to close AHS for a day, said Susan Davis, the district's senior manager for community affairs.

Police officers will be on campus during the day, Davis said.

According to a letter to parents from AHS Principal Robert Ithurburn, the graffiti threatens "violent action" against the school on Dec. 11. Neither the district nor the Alameda Police Department has released the exact wording of the message.

"It is our hope that this is an act of vandalism reflecting a poor choice of words and is not a serious threat," Ithurburn said in his letter. "However we are responding seriously to insure the safety of all students and staff."
